The Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council, or KCBC, has come up with a plan to increase the number of Christians in the state. At present nearly 19% of Keralites are Christians which was around 24% in the 1950's. KCBC, has always remained against birth control but this is for the first time that they have openly admitted this fact. Christians were always discouraged to use birth control methods, especially abortion. The programme will initially provide free education for the third and fourth child in schools managed by Christian authorities, as well as medical assistance to mothers in Christian-run hospitals.
It's felt that this movement by KCBC is to find more priests and nuns as in early days when there used to be more number of children in the families it was customary, especially among the poor, to send at least one of their children to nunneries or monasteries. With fewer volunteers these days, the church is pushing couples to have more children in the hope it would find more priests and nuns.
In a country where there are100 crore people, and 10's & 1000's of people struggle for existence, here is a group of people within itself is trying to expand it's numbers. A campaign against abortion can be said to be ethical as it kills a life but 'What about encouraging the couples to have more children'?Isn't 'Religion meant to propagate spiritualism and provide peace of mind to the distressed'? or 'Is to compete with other communities in terms of numbers and prove themselves stronger?' I am not against Christianity or any other community but I see no radical logic in the latest statement of the church in Kerala.
