What an IDEA !

This is photo taken at 'Forum', a shopping mall in Bangalore. You may be thinking, what a person i am.., Didn't I get anything better at the mall to shoot? Well, I would like to bring into your attention the message written on the bench "For disabled and senior citizens only". Can you guess why? Many of you may have guessed it right, as the mall owners don't want common people to sit back and enjoy the luxury of a mall without shopping. Yes, this is a precise design to engage people to roam around the mall and when they are tired of roaming on their legs to get into some shop and sit for a while. This would surely mean that people getting into the shops may make a small shopping for name sake. For shop owners even this counts for profit in the long run. You may have also noticed that at malls, the escalators seem to be really messy. If you want to reach the top floor via escalator, you will have a walk through the entire mall. When one of the escalator takes you to the next floor, then the adjacent escalator will not be upwards to the next floor, it will rather be the downward escalator. These simple designs and very rarely noticed but mind you, its not any child's play. Its design by some of the country's best designers. There is even a two year PG course about Strategic Design Management in the National Institute of Design, Ahmadabad. See, how a designer's mind works ! An engineer would start at facts and end up in a theory while a designer starts at a possibility and ends up in an innovation !!!
